Our Favorite Products and Some Cat-Proofing advice
Bringing your kitty home-
Royal Canin Kitten
We use Royal Canin Kitten. We feel this is the best food for our baby kitties.
We highly recommend Free Feeding. This means that food is always available for him or her. This allows kitty to feel secure knowing there will always be food for her or him. Cats that grow up having their portions measured out tend to become obsessed with eating, trying to steal from your plate or anywhere they see or smell food. I have free fed for 45 years and have never had a fat animal.
World's Best Litter
We recommend World's Best Litter. This is a non-clay litter. Clay litter causes respiratory illnesses and can be very harmful to your cat. There are many all natural litters out there. If you plan on switching remember to switch the litter like you switch food. VERY slowly. If kitty does not recognize her or his potty he or she may choose to go elsewhere.
Toxins
Please take a moment to review what household toxins are harmful to your cat. Chocolate is toxic for both dogs and cats. Certain essential oils are deadly to cats and other animals. Almost all house plants are toxic to cats. Please do your research and cat-proof before you bring him or her into your home.
Adult Cat Food
We use Taste of the Wild: Venison.
I grew up in the country, I love the idea of using healthy, lean meat. I am not a huge fan of salmon cat food because I can not stand the smell, but they have many varieties of TotW.
Snacks are not healthy for kitty. Soft, all natural bagged food(in the can section) can be given once in a while as a snack. You can also cook up some chicken or fish for kitty and that is also a great snack. Remember that spices are usually toxic. Cats love real food, there is no need to spice it up!
Kittens should be on kitten food until they are a year. Weaning should be done as slow as absolutely possible. Add a tsp, a tablespoon, a 1/4 cup, etc. Do it over the course of weeks, not days. Their tummies can't handle dramatic changes in diet.
Litter Boxes
All my kitties go to homes that are INDOOR ONLY. That means they are not allowed to go outside. Outside cats will be killed by disease, the road or other animals. I grew up in the country and we lost all our cats to one of these. Which is why this is non-negotiable in my contract.
Downside of inside kitties: litter boxes. Id love to tell you those electric boxes work but I have found nothing works better than good old fashioned scooping. I scoop twice a day and I completely empty, scrub and replace with clean litter every 1-1 1/2 weeks.
A clean litter box and a spayed/neutered cat will really cut down on chances of kitties peeing or pooping outside the litter box.
